Carlo Ancelotti appeared set to become the next full-time manager of Chelsea last night after claims he had agreed a three-year deal to take charge at Stamford Bridge.

According to sources close to the AC Milan boss, Ancelotti has told Roman Abramovich he is ready to leave the San Siro for SW6 in the summer.

Under the terms of the outline deal, Ancelotti will receive £5.8million per year before bonuses.

Chelsea were remaining tightlipped last night but the news from Italy signals that Abramovich has completed his mission of attracting his prime target to become Chelsea's sixth manager in five years.

As Mirror Sport revealed when Luis Felipe Scolari was sacked in February, Ancelotti was always Abramovich's preferred choice, even though the Italian had turned Cheslea down last summer.

Abramovich promised Guus Hiddink when he took temporary charge that it was only until he could find a permanent replacement and has spent the past two months seeking to persuade Ancelotti to leave Milan.

Real Madrid were also keen on bringing Ancelotti to the Bernabeu, with likely next President Florentino Perez flying to Geneva last month in a bid to entice him aboard.

But Ancelotti declined the offer, with Real briefing they had been told the Italian had set his mind on a move to England after eight years at the Milan helm, which included Champions League success in 2007.

And the news from Italy last night suggests that Chelsea have now got the man who has the track record of success and club experience that a dressing room still haunted by the ghost of Jose Mourinho needed.
