Sir Alex Ferguson agrees with Arsene Wenger that Cristiano Ronaldo is “arrogant” – but has told Manchester United’s star man to carry on tormenting opponents.
Arsenal manager Wenger claimed Ronaldo was not given the protection he wants from referees because of his arrogant style, which was expected to provoke an angry reaction from old rival Fergie.
But Fergie backed Wenger’s claim and said he would never tell Ronaldo to change his style of play – even if it makes him a ‘marked man’.
“I don’t see why I should restrain Ronaldo,” said Fergie. “That’s the way he plays and I enjoy watching that. Christ, I paid £12million to see that.

“Wenger said that sometimes it appears as arrogance and I can understand what he’s saying. When a player expresses himself in such an entertaining way, defenders don’t enjoy it.
“It was the same with George Best. Players like that have the courage to do what they do and that’s the wonderful thing Ronaldo has. He’s always prepared to entertain and do something good with the ball.
“All the great players have a touch of what you can call ‘nice’ arrogance, a belief in themselves. It didn’t matter who they were playing against – they always wanted the ball and wanted to play.”
