Ben Foster has vowed to replace Edwin Van der Sar as Manchester United's No.1 keeper and has his sights set on becoming England's first choice for the 2010 World Cup.
His penalty shoot-out heroics in United's Carling Cup win over Tottenham will earn him a new four-year, £40,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford, with his current deal set to expire in 16 months.
But Foster is not content to remain second-choice behind Van der Sar and revealed his determination to fight him for his United place next season and challenge David James for the right to be England's No.1.
The 25-year-old, who has one cap, said: "I've got my eyes on being in the England squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer.
"That's a big target for me. I've not been in a squad since Fabio Capello took over because of injuries.
"And I can't expect to be in the England team if I'm not playing regularly. He has made it clear he isn't picking players on reputation, only on merit. And that's the way it should be.

"When we went up to collect the Carling Cup it was the first time I'd spoken to Capello. He shook my hand and said 'well done'.
"I don't want to even think about leaving United but I need to be pushing on in my career. I'll be 26 in April and I need to be playing regular football.
"But I'm at the biggest club in the world, and want to stay for as long as I can.
"Hopefully, I'll have a decade or more at United and I want the Carling Cup to be the first of many trophies."
United will open contract talks with Foster's representatives soon, with a new deal expected to be agreed by the end of this month.
