Slick Sevilla Lead Cup Charge

Sevilla FC proved the scourge of RC Deportivo La Coruña yet again as they booked their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on a night when the cup action in Spain, France and Greece went very much according to expectations.

Depor misery
Deportivo will be glad to see the back of Sevilla, at least until May, after the Andalusian outfit claimed their third victory against them in eight days. Leading 2-1 after the first leg, the visitors went further ahead when Jesús Navas struck the opener inside 60 seconds and it was 3-0 by half-time as Luis Fabiano pounced on two defensive errors. Depor were reduced to ten men midway through the second period and their misery was complete when Pablo Álvarez skewed a late penalty against the post after an incident that saw Andrés Palop dismissed.

Valencia determined
Sevilla's city rivals Real Betis Balompié and RCD Espanyol avoided embarrassment against third-tier opposition, though the latter needed the away-goals rule to see off Club Polideportivo Ejido. Holders Valencia CF were also given a severe test, going to extra time before prevailing 4-2 on aggregate against Real Racing Club. RCD Mallorca beat UD Almería by the same margin, while FC Barcelona completed a convincing 5-2 aggregate victory against Club Atlético de Madrid and a last-minute Jorge Garcia header sent Real Sporting de Gijón through at the expense of Real Valladolid CF.

PSG prevail
There was also a late goal in the French League Cup tie between Paris Saint-Germain FC and Ligue 2 side RC Lens, a replay of last year's final, though it did not have a bearing on the outcome as holders PSG progressed to the last four. An early Sidi Keita own goal and last-gasp strike from Jérémy Clément decided matters, as PSG earned a semi-final date with FC Girondins de Bordeaux, 2-1 winners against LB Châteauroux elsewhere on Wednesday.

Panathinaikos progress
Panathinaikos FC are through to the Greek Cup quarter-finals after a convincing 4-0 victory away to mid-table Super League team Panthrakikos FC. Ante Rukavina (18) set the visitors on their way in Komotini before second-half strikes from Gabriel, Cleyton and substitute Lazaros Hristodoulopoulos sealed Henk ten Cate's team's progress. In the evening's other game Aris Thessaloniki FC drew 0-0 with city rivals PAOK FC.
