He is seen by Boro as the figurehead they require to revitalise their squad. Prising him away from United will be difficult, but Southgate wants experience after chairman Steve Gibson admitted their relegated squad was "too young".
Boro have to sell first, and centre-back Robert Huth is being chased by Hannover while Jeremie Aliadiere is a target for Fulham.
