Man United Must Step Up a Gear, says Fergie

Manchester United may be on course for an unprecedented quadruple but Sir Alex Ferguson is still demanding that his players step up a gear.

Although United are two points clear in the Premier League, in the Carling Cup final and chasing FA Cup and Champions League glory, Fergie claimed there is more to come from his players.

United, who play Derby in the FA Cup fifth round tomorrow, have struggled to score this season and have ground out 11 1-0 wins in all competitions.

Now Fergie has called on his men to turn on the style in the finale to what could be an historic campaign.

"We're at that time of the season when I expect the players to kick on," said Fergie. "I've seen it over the years I've been at the club.

"Sometimes we lost titles in the run-in, but in most cases the players tend to respond and the present group seem to have a gear they can bring out."

Fergie's thoughts were echoed by his No.2 Mike Phelan. "We feel we're playing well but we can improve," he said. "We can get better. We can score more and that's our aim."
