Sven Goran Eriksson has been offered a remarkable return ticket to the Premier League with crisis club Portsmouth.

Former England boss Eriksson, currently in charge of Mexico, has been sounded out by Pompey who want him to replace Tony Adams after his dismissal from Fratton Park.

Eriksson, 61, is top of Portsmouth’s short list which also includes ex-West Ham boss Alan Curbishley, Croatia manager Slaven Bilic, Graeme Souness and former Chelsea manager Avram Grant.

But Portsmouth believe they may be able to tempt ex-Man City boss Eriksson, who could even be axed by Mexico if they lose to the United States in Ohio tomorrow.

Eriksson has told friends he would happily “walk from Mexico back to London” for the Chelsea job but Portsmouth have made him aware of their interest.

Eriksson, whose reputation was revived by his stint in charge at City, is close to super-agent Pini Zahavi who is masterminding Pompey’s hunt for a new manager.
