Inter Milan 1 - 0 Sampdoria
MILAN, April 23 - Inter Milan fell short in their bid to reach the Italian Cup final on Thursday, with a 1-0 home win over Sampdoria not enough to make up for the 3-0 defeat they suffered in the semi-final first leg.
Sampdoria's 3-1 aggregate success takes them through to face Lazio in the May 13 final at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given Inter hope midway through the first half of the second leg with a fine angled shot from the edge of the area.
The home side, who had Marco Materazzi sent off at the end of the match when he responded to being booked by applauding the referee, created plenty of chances for a second goal, especially at the end of the first half.
Samp held firm, though, and can now look forward to the final against Lazio, after they won 2-1 at Juventus on Wednesday to complete a 4-2 aggregate win.
The visitors from Genoa, cheered on by around 15,000 travelling fans, made a bright start as Inter struggled to adjust to a new formation with a three-man defence.
Jose Mourinho's side frequently resorted to fouls to halt Samp's advances early on but Ibrahimovic's right-footed strike ignited them.
Soon afterwards the Swede forced a desperate save from Luca Castellazzi with a header before hitting the post with a diagonal lob, while Julio Cruz nodded narrowly wide on the stroke of halftime.
