Aston Villa to Make New Move for Micah Richards

Aston Villa will make a fresh move in the summer for Micah Richards amid growing fears about Martin Laursen's long-term fitness.

Martin O'Neill enquired last month about signing Manchester City centre-back Richards, 20, for around £8million.

But City were not willing to sell their homegrown star until getting a replacement - and they failed to land Everton's Joleon Lescott.

Villa still believe they could snap up England international Richards in the summer though, following his indifferent form this term.

Danish stopper Laursen, 31, has been plagued by knee problems since arriving from AC Milan in May 2004 for £3m. The crocked star is due back next month after surgery, but Villa medics are worried about Laursen's ability to play several matches in quick succession.

Midfielder Stiliyan Petrov, 29, is close to signing a new contract which will put him on around £45,000 a week at Villa Park. Signed from Celtic in August 2006 for £6.5m, Petrov has been one of Villa's key performers this season.

O'Neill's squad is stretched to the limit against CSKA in the UEFA Cup tomorrow after central defender Curtis Davies suffered a shoulder injury in the FA Cup defeat at Everton.

"Curtis was in a lot of pain," said O'Neill. "His shoulder came out of place and luckily, with a bit of manipulation, it got back in again.

"We'll have to have a look at that, I think it's happened to him once before."
