Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese will miss the German club's UEFA Cup Round of 32 second leg against AC Milan on Thursday having failed to recover from the thigh injury which kept him out at the weekend.

The 27-year-old was sidelined for the 2-1 loss to FC Energie Cottbus on Saturday because of a muscle tear in his right thigh and has not made the trip to Milan, where Bremen need to score having drawn the first leg 1-1. "I'm very disappointed not to be able to help the team in such an important game," said Wiese. His absence should mean a UEFA Cup debut for 28-year-old Christian Vander, who said: "I am always happy when I get the chance to play. The match against Milan will be my first in the UEFA Cup and because of that it's special." The winners of the tie will play Olympiacos CFP or AS Saint-Etienne in the last 16.
