Don't Force Arsene Wenger Into the Arms of Real Madrid Warns Arsenal Chief

Arsenal Chairman Peter Hill-Wood last night condemned the "disgraceful" shareholders who could drive Arsene Wenger into the arms of Real Madrid.

Wenger is still furious about criticism directed at him during a meeting last week with shareholders in which his transfer policy and strategy were called into question like never before.

Madrid's club president-elect Florentino Perez is taking advantage of the potential turmoil by making an all-out assault to entice Wenger from the Emirates.

While Hill-Wood insisted Wenger was not one to break a contract, he admitted the grumbling angered the Arsenal boss, who remains the major reason the Gunners have become the club they are.

He said: "Frankly, some of the questions were quite disgraceful.

"There you have the most successful manager in our history and two or three of the shareholders made the most negative and somewhat hostile and sarcastic comments, which I think were completely out of order.

"I was very upset by the questions, I have to say.

"We, and he, kindly, agreed to have this meeting and whether we have another one is a moot point.

"Arsene was very diplomatic and honest in his answers and deserves great credit for that. But I wouldn't have been they had asked me."

Wenger has privately complained he is being forced to operate in the transfer market with one hand tied behind his back, dismissing the idea he does not want to spend money.

And Perez is ready to give Wenger all the authority he would want in a bid to get his man at the third time of asking.

That would mean Wenger being given a free hand over his technical staff and the guarantee he will be able to impose his blueprint on the whole club and not just the first team.
