Knives are Out for Chelsea Target Carlo Ancelotti

Chelsea’s manager-in-waiting Carlo Ancelotti was the victim of a savage attack by his AC Milan boss yesterday.

San Siro owner Silvio Berlusconi accused Ancelotti, Roman Abramovich’s prime target to take charge of the Blues this summer, of costing his club the Serie A title.

Berlusconi, the billionaire Italian Prime Minister, said: "We lost the title because of Ancelotti.

"Many times we did not use the right tactics. We have so many good dribblers and should have based our football on this asset but we did the opposite." Milan trail arch-rivals Inter by seven points with three games left, and Berlusconi added: "It’s all Ancelotti’s fault because with the players we have, we could have easily gone head to head with Inter.

"We should have used Ronaldinho more, and we should have been more offensive and the defence needs to improve.

"Too often this season we gave away goals in the last few minutes of the match."

Ancelotti was identified as the man Abramovich wanted soon after Luiz Felipe Scolari was sacked in February.

Sources close to discussions insisted an "agreement in principle" for Ancelotti to come to Chelsea has already been reached, despite the Italian’s hesitancy, which has caused concern amid the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

But if Ancelotti was still considering his future plans - with Chelsea ready to offer him a five-year deal worth £6.4million per year - he appeared to be left with little alternative other than to pack his bags following Berlusconi’s astonishing attack.

Chelsea are likely to discover on Friday what charges they and their stars face following the scenes that scarred the heartbreaking end of their Champions League dreams.

Didier Drogba seems certain to be cited by UEFA for his histrionics while Michael Ballack could also be in trouble, with Chelsea as a club fearing charges for failing to control their players and over two bottles reported to have been thrown.

Drogba has admitted he would love to be back in France, helping his beloved Marseille to win the title.

They lead Ligue 1 on goal difference from Bordeaux with only four games to go.

Drogba lost the UEFA Cup final with Marseille in his solitary season there before joining Chelsea in 2004.

The Ivory Coast striker said: "I must confess that I really wish I was there right now.

"I envy them a lot. The atmosphere must be crazy all around the city. It is going to be massive in Marseille if they win silverware."
