Juventus Fans Jeer Fabio Cannavaro On His Return To Turin

The Italian international faced boos at the Olimpico last night, but insists he is happy to be back in Turin.

Fears that Fabio Cannavaro would not receive an entirely cordial welcome at Juventus appear to have had some foundation as the Italian international defender was subjected to abuse from supporters on Monday.

According to press reports in the peninsula, Real Madrid and Italy defender Cannavaro put pen to paper on his new Juve deal yesterday before heading over to the Stadio Olimpico to play in a charity match between Alessandro Del Piero’s team and a selection of Italian singers.

Cannavaro, who controversially left the Bianconeri in 2006 in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal, was greeted with jeers when he came on after the interval and the supporters kept booing him whenever he touched the ball.

Fans also displayed banners against the return of the 35-year-old last week, but the stubborn Neapolitan has vowed to work hard to win over the Olimpico faithful.

“I am very happy to play here and to do it again next season,” he is quoted as saying in La Stampa.

“Turin has always been a very important place for me.”

Juve general manager Jean-Claude Blanc confirmed yesterday that he is ready to make Cannavaro’s return official and an announcement could come in the next few hours.
