Manchester City Working Hard to get Diego Forlan

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is stepping up his bid to bring former United hero Diego Forlan back to the Premier League.

Hughes and executive chairman Garry Cook watched Forlan fire Atletico Madrid into next season's Champions League - but he wants to tempt him to return to England in the summer instead.

Forlan knows if City's interest, with his Argentinian agent approached again after a move in the last window fell through because of the valuation on his head.

Hughes - given shock backing to carry on - wants to bring in Forlan if the price is right but will have to find around £20 million to land the Uruguayan hit man who has been prolific in Spain for Atletico and Villarreal.

Forlan is interested in the move, especially if the terms are top-level, and he is not worried about playing for Manchester's 'other' club despite happy memories of his time at Old Trafford.

Hughes and Cook took in Atletico's win over Valencia to make updates on other targets, but Spain's number one striker David Villa has been priced out of their league and is more likely to join Barcelona.

An official offer for Forlan could be made shortly, although City insiders reveal that they have been doing their homework on the player and his demands before negotiating a transfer fee.

A top City official has been in South America over the past few weeks as Hughes and his money men try to cut through the red tape and queue of agents off the pitch.
