Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand admitted his side’s defending had been to blame after they slumped to defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final.

Goals by Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi saw the Spanish side claim the trophy for a third time and Ferdinand was quick to congratulate Pep Guardiola’s team.

“You have to give credit to Barcelona, they played well,” he told ITV Sport after the game.

“We are very disappointed to lose the game but when they play like this you need to be able to play your best football and today we didn’t produce it.

“I don’t think one of us out there could really say we played well either as individuals or collectively.”

United started the game brightly but went behind to Eto’o’s opener before Messi sealed the win in the second-half.

Ferdinand insisted his side ought to have done better with the goals and also rued the chances United did create.

"Two soft goals really, shame we didn’t play well but we still created five or six great opportunities,” he explained.

“But today wasn’t to be for us and congratulations to Barcelona.”

The England international also admitted that the Catalans had deserved to win the game and insisted his side could have no excuses for their defeat.

“No excuses, I think on today’s performance they were the better team,” he concluded.

“They got two goals at crucial times and are deserved winners today.”
